LockerBlogger – Schmoozing with Pro Athletes
by Annat Katz | Leave a Comment
Locker Blogger – If rubbing against pro athletes is what rocks your sporty boat, you might want to nail that VIP pass for your next sport event and try to get a personal autograph and a quick small talk with your personal hero. But I bet that back stage pass, however expensive, won’t get you into your favorite NBA, NFL, MLB or any other sports team’s locker room. LockerBlogger opens the doors to that sweaty change room, and invites the entire sports community to take part in a new innovative social platform; it’s a one-stop place where athletes, coaches and fans can all come together and schmooze all they want.
I seriously believe LockerBlogger is going to be huge, and the recent news post on the site’s launch – published by TechCrunch – is surely one of many other media praises to come. What exactly does LockerBlogger offer? They wish “to become the ultimate hub for the global sports community to celebrate pro and amateur achievement, access expert coaching education and skills development, and plug in to active conversations about the pastimes they love. Creating connections is the name of our game.” Explore the wonderful world of sports marketing and social interaction by browsing the site’s Lockers, Groups, Blogs, Channels, and more. To get an idea of what LockerBlogger is about, check out NFL Pro Larry Johnson’s Locker. See the harmonious marriage of social networking and sports in sweet action!

SceneIt – Answer and Ye Shall Receive Glitz and Glory
by Annat Katz | Leave a Comment
SceneIt – Movie quizzes and film trivia have been around forever, and they all do a great job in making us relish in self-satisfaction when we get that ‘what did Brett and his friends in Pulp Fiction have for breakfast’ question right (click here for the answer). But what if such quiz sites offered more, much more than the usual Q&A form? SceneIt does just that and a whole lot more.
Create your own avatar, dress him or her as you like and answer your way to various upgrades and increased Glitz amounts (the site’s currency). Earn enough of it, and become a recognized Top Player. If you’re dead set on securing more ‘Bling’ – all the user stuff that isn’t free and screams ‘luxury’ – you can buy it. Work your way up from a mere Waiter to an acclaimed Star, Screenwriter or Director, see what others have accomplish and show off your film wits while climbing the Hollywood ladder. Answer away…

Dornob – Divine Design Coming Right at Ya
by Annat Katz | Leave a Comment
Dornob – Appreciating top quality design is never a difficult task, but finding it online in copious amounts certainly is. A year ago we reviewed WebUrbanist in our blog, praising its terrific content and concepts. Well, the very same creator who brought us WebUrbanist also throws Dornob our way and rightly so. Kurt Kohlstedt, also Founder and Creative Director of WebEcoist, Gajitz.com and Misnamed Media, invites us via Dornob to explore the forefront of architectural, interior, furniture, furnishing and fixture designs – all updated on a daily basis. Add the awe-inspiring photos and superb content, and you end up with one exquisite design blog. Some of my favorite posts include Bathroom Designs: Pictures, Ideas, Interiors & Inspiration, Historic Preservation + Urban Landscape Design = and Flat-Pack Furniture: Eco-Friendly Cardboard Chair Designs.

Tripwolf – Globetrotting Both Worlds
by Shachar Pessis | Leave a Comment
Tripwolf – What makes a good travel website stand out from the rest? High resolution photos? Informative and engaging content? Or maybe including geographic locations outside the Western mainstream? All of the factors above would, no doubt, make one hell of an online travel guide, and there is a fair number of such sites available on the Web (check out our Travel page for a variety of these). Nevertheless, there is one particular travel site that is truly unique and innovative: Tripwolf. It’s one of those sites which makes the whole much greater than the sum of its parts.
Why is it so special? Because Tripwolf “combines travel tips from professional travel writers with a vast collection of travel information, experiences and reviews from a worldwide community of thousands of travelers like you.” Isn’t that great? You get the best of both worlds: feedback from professional savvy travelers, and from regular people’s travel choices worldwide. To test Tripwolf’s service, I explored their take on Barcelona, which I visited last year. Well before our trip, my girlfriend and I researched the city’s attractions, and we got a general idea of which places we should visit.
As is the case with many first time tourists in Barcelona (however well-informed they may be), very soon we realized we couldn’t possibly visit all the sites on our check list. We had to skip Parc Guell for example, which was a bit of a disappointment. If we were to consult Tripwolf prior to our visit to Barcelona, we would have learned that the very same Parc was voted as the top Barcelona attraction by travelers…

Good Ecosystem – Harmony Granted
by Shachar Pessis | Leave a Comment
Good Ecosystem – Do you wake up every day asking yourself ‘how can I make the world a better place?’ Let’s be brutally honest; most of us (including me) don’t even come near that question in the morning… That’s not to say this isn’t a most burning issue. It’s not that we don’t care, we simply already have quite a bit on our plate on any given day, and the easiest thing to do is to remain within that plate’s radius.
Here’s a great solution for those of you who want to pitch in without making any ’sacrifices:’ Good Ecosystem offers an excellent ‘good doer’s’ starting point. A most vibrant and well designed visual informative platform, Good Ecosystem presents the crucial, boiled-down facts along with future acts that will be taken. One particular health goal I found interesting was this UN’s education mission. So what are you waiting for? It’s not going to cost you a dime or make you move an inch. Simply follow the Harmony Map Road.

Tartelette – One Cookie for you, Three for Me
by Annat Katz | Leave a Comment
Tartelette – This mostly dessert food blog is so much more than what its title implies. Amazing I-gotta-have-it professional photos of Helen’s edible creations are definitely this blog’s strongest forte. Lucky for us, Helen is not only a renowned pastry chef, but she’s also an expert in food styling, photography (no kidding) and recipe development, just to name a few of her specialties. One visit to her blog will say it all! Here are a few recipes of absolutely delicious and beautiful desserts, plus one unsweetened dish: Apricot and Wattleseeds Tea Cakes, Lavender and Espresso Truffles, and last but not least – Savory Bacon, Onion and Parsley Tartelettes.

Daily Squee – Ya Gotta See the Baby!
by Shachar Pessis | Leave a Comment
Daily Squee – Why is it that animal offspring and young are always cute, no matter the species? To tell you the truth, I have no idea but according to this Happy News article, it’s not a coincidence that we like infants (both human and non-human). Daily Squee is a virtual shrine for cherishing all cute and small organisms out there, featuring wonderful photos that will make you grab the nearest pillow, hug it so gently and call it Cuddles… Start with the pictures below, my favorites, and you won’t be able to stop. If you know where this post’s title came from, I’ll let you cherish that moment once more – scroll down to the video below the pics.

WitStream – Twitter seems like one of the most ubiquitous phenomena today, with millions of people worldwide constantly updating their thoughts, actions and feelings. But this, along with Facebook’s status and real-time feed feature (and other apps following the same trend) is one of the cases where quantity overshadows quality. So what hope is there? Simply put, WitStream.
WitStream (still in beta) is an unobtrusive, funny and yes, witty platform celebrating aphoristic humor statements all over. According to their About page, WitStream is “a place where you can read some truly entertaining posts. Assembled at WitStream™ is a group of pre-approved, hand selected writers, comedians, and all around brilliant humorists.” So take a break from the social networking and blogging swamp for a few moments each day, and you’ll thank these guys for helping you keep things (and life) in the right proportions. Just dive in and rejoice!

Animated Jazz Band – Mix’em up but Keep it Cool
by Shachar Pessis | 1 Comment
Animated Jazz Band – How does instrumental music that is both intricate and harmonious come to life? It’s quite simple; the composer writes or composes music notes for each respective instrument, and the players translate those notes into sounds, working together to form a music compilation.
But you know what? There’s even an easier method than what I just described, and it even gives way to super fun free-styling: The Animated Jazz Band is a 9-member band, consisting of singers and various instrument players such as a drummer, a pianist, a guitarist and even a synthesizer player, just to name a few. Clicking on each member prompts an additional theme, creating a more complex melody that’s soothing and enjoyable. Drums please!

Magnets – Opposites Attract

Magnets – Your goal is to lead the blue or red particles out from the Spawn Boxes to the Receive Boxes. Place the magnets correctly to direct the particles, then hit “Start” to see what happens! For more Weekly Games, make sure you check back every Wednesday. On a side note, as a child I was fascinated with magnets and I used to play a lot with them. This online game really took me down Memory Lane, which prompt the videos below…

AllMyFaves Brazil – Ordem e Progresso Indeed
by Shachar Pessis | Leave a Comment
AllMyFaves Brazil – Not a lot of people know this, but the Brazilian flag entails the Country’s national motto, Ordem e Progresso (”Order and Progress”). The reason I’m telling you this is that for the past two months my desktop has been embellished with this gorgeous green flag of the Land of Samba. The funny thing is, ordem e progresso goes hand in hand with the All My Faves manifesto – offering an organized and progressive platform for search and discovery on the Web. To make a long story short, our devoted team of researchers and developers toiled these past couple of months over the new homepage for Brazil. The result? See for yourself. Creating the Brazil homepage was made in the exact same way we built all our different pages, including the AMF pages for the US, Canada, UK and India; we selected sites based on their usefulness, friendliness, technology, design, unobtrusiveness and popularity.
So if you are from Brazil, I’m sure you’ll find this resource very useful since it answers all your online daily needs, with the added bonus of inviting you to explore many other brilliant sites. Despite our efforts to make this homepage as encompassing as humanly possible, we may have left out a particular website you feel is essential. In that case, drop us a line. I also invite all non-Brazilian users to drop by and see AMF’s newest vibrant addition.
As a tribute to Brazil, I have listed below two of my favorite Brazilian songs, The Girl from Ipanema and Lambada. I had a hard time pinning down a version for the first song; I found so many excellent options on YouTube. In the end, I narrowed it down to two versions, a Sinatra & Jobim take, and another from the 1964 film “Get Yourself a College Girl.” By the way, if you are interested in the story behind this song, click here.

Books of Odds – Everyday Odds
by Shachar Pessis | Leave a Comment
Book of Odds – Back in 1982, we used to live in Washington D.C. Naturally, I was a kid at the time, but I still remember the tragedy of the crash of Air Florida Flight 90 that year. A couple of months later, my parents took me and my sister on a cruise, at the end of which we had to take a flight back to D.C. As we were waiting at the gate, I noticed an Air Florida plane approaching. At this point I realized we were about to board a plane which is exactly the same as the one that had crashed. When I confronted my parents, they adopted the probability approach to reassure me and my sister. “The odds of this plane crashing today are slim to none,” my father said. Seen as I am alive and well today, I guess he was right… It’s funny how the worst tragedies and best things that could happen to you boil down to simple numbers.
Speaking of odds and probabilities, the Book of Odds is a brilliant site that “contains hundreds of thousands of Odds Statements, from the odds of being the only one to survive a plane crash, to the odds of having a heart attack, to the odds of having ever eaten cold pizza for breakfast. Book of Odds not only allows you to search for the odds and chances that concern or interest you the most, but also to understand probability by comparing the odds of unfamiliar events to others you have personally experienced.” Delve into the fascinating world of chances, odds and probabilities while skipping the boring math lectures.
